What’s Next in AI? Here are the next levels.

Updated: 3 days ago

What’s Next in AI? There are five levels.

As the technology landscape evolves, the concept of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) — a type of AI that can think, learn, and act across a broad range of tasks as effectively as humans — is moving closer to reality. For those in the boutique hotel industry, each step towards AGI offers new opportunities to enhance operations and guest engagement. What follows below is a fairly accepted framework within the A.I. community, which classifies A.I. evolution in 5 stages. It does leave out things like audio, images, and video, but those are usually classified between stages 2 and 3. Even the experts disagree about how soon each level will arrive and exactly how to define each level, but it's still a useful framework to imagine what is coming later. Below is a high level definition of the stages and their potential impacts on boutique hotels.

Level 1: Chatbots

Current Examples: GPT-4 and Others Integrating AI-driven chatbots is the first step toward leveraging AI in hospitality. Tools like GPT-4 have revolutionized customer service by providing instant communication capabilities. For boutique hotels, this means offering 24/7 responsiveness without the overhead of additional night-shift staff. Chatbots can manage everything from booking inquiries and room service orders to providing local travel tips, enhancing guest satisfaction with immediate responses and freeing up human staff to focus on more personalized service.

Level 2: Reasoning

Current Developments: GPT-o1 With advancements like GPT-o1, AI reasoning takes center stage. These sophisticated systems understand context and make decisions based on complex data analysis. For boutique hotels, GPT-o1 could optimize Yield and Revenue Management. By analyzing data from past booking patterns to market trends and competitor pricing, GPT-o1 can forecast demand more accurately and suggest optimal pricing strategies for every night and room type, ensuring competitive pricing that attracts guests while maximizing profitability.

Level 3: Agents that Perform Actions

Future Projection The third stage introduces AI agents capable of executing actions based on their analyses and decisions. For boutique hotels, this could mean AI systems that automatically adjust digital advertising spends based on forecasted demand or manage inventory in real-time based on occupancy rates. These AI agents could also personalize the guest experience by adjusting room settings according to preferences collected from past stays, all before the guest checks in.

Level 4: Autonomous Organizations

Speculative Future At this level, AI could potentially oversee entire hotel operations. Imagine a boutique hotel where AI systems manage everything from guest bookings to facility maintenance and staff scheduling. This would reduce administrative burdens and allow hotel owners to focus on guest relations and business development. Such autonomous management would ensure that operations always align with strategic business goals, adjusting in real-time to market changes or guest feedback.

Level 5: Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)

The Ultimate Goal AGI would mark the peak of AI development, equipping systems with the ability to manage both operational and strategic aspects of running a boutique hotel. AGI could lead marketing campaigns, develop guest engagement strategies, and handle complex customer service scenarios involving emotional nuances typically understood only by humans. This could fundamentally transform hospitality, providing a level of customization and efficiency previously unimaginable.

Implications for Boutique Hotels

Each AI development stage offers tools to enhance operational efficiency, improve guest satisfaction, and refine strategic decision-making. Adopting AI early can automate routine operations, allowing staff more time to create unique, memorable guest experiences. As AI technology advances, it could assist in broader management aspects, from daily operations to overarching strategy.

Thoughtfully integrating AI means enhancing the strengths of boutique hotels — personalized service and unique guest experiences — while ensuring the technology complements the human touch. Hotels that navigate this evolution carefully will not only adapt but also thrive, setting new standards in hospitality and offering unparalleled guest experiences.

This journey towards AGI isn’t just about adopting new technologies; it’s about reimagining the future of hospitality to stay competitive and relevant in a rapidly changing world. As boutique hotel owners and operators, embracing these advancements strategically will ensure we lead the charge in redefining guest service excellence.
